Do not know how to write a paragraph? A paragraph is a group of sentences connected with a unique idea, topic or theme. The paragraphs are the vitally important stones of your writing that make it comprehensive and easy to follow.
According to the modern writing standards, all the writings are made up of paragraphs. Reports and other types of technical writing require creating several sections where paragraphs serve for explaining the ideas, bullet points, figures and other data. Before writing a paragraph, you should know that the classic content organization contains:
- an introductory paragraph with the thesis statement at the end;
- several body paragraphs;
- a concluding paragraph.
What Is the Average Length of a Paragraph?
As it was mentioned above, a paragraph serves for the development of one particular idea or an argument. Undoubtedly, it is virtually impossible to write a paragraph in one or two sentences. It should not be shorter than 2-3 sentences, and very often it is much longer than this. Usually, the students unite five-six sentences into a paragraph to make it full of useful evidence and creative thoughts. One important remark – usually the length of a paragraph depends on the length of the whole content. If the writing takes only one page, it definitely will not contain several long paragraphs. Many students do not know how to write paragraphs, and the most common mistake is that they create too short ones. It is almost impossible to develop your idea in two-three sentences and provide the strong arguments. If you do this, you will surely lose points and leave a bad impression with your piece of writing. Do not forget that one paragraph should contain only one point. Also, do not go to the opposite extreme and extend your paragraph too much. A long paragraph will make it impossible for your reader to follow the topical sentence. Sure, you do not want to make your content boring for your reader, so try not to overburden it with commonly known information.
What Structure Should Each Paragraph Have?
It would be wrong to claim that all paragraphs should have the same structure. Different types of writing require different paragraph structure. However, there are some items that should be used in every type. Each paragraph should have a topical sentence that declares its main idea. Normally, the topic sentence should be put at the very beginning and developed throughout the whole paragraph. There are paragraphs that do not require the topical sentence or require it in the end, but the vast majority follows the classic structure. Every paragraph should contain explanation for all the unknown terms and notions. Be sure to provide evidence for all your arguments. The reader should understand that you have taken these words not from your mind but from reliable sources of information. In the main body paragraphs, do not hesitate to evaluate all the sources that you use, compare and contrast ideas of the researchers, examine the results, and discuss the issues raised in their works.
Still do not understand how to write a good paragraph? You should always make your paragraphs coherent. All the sentences should be simple and informative. While writing body paragraphs, do not use too long sentences because it will be easy to lose the key idea and make many grammar and punctuation mistakes. What is more, you should avoid sentence fragments because they are inappropriate.
How to Make a Proper Division?
Let your reader understand where one paragraph ends and another one begins. Traditionally, students use transition words to do it properly. Do not make a space line between the paragraphs. If your paragraphs are logically divided, the reader will easily distinguish them. Remember that a good paragraph is your key to success!
